The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, particularly in the Central and South regions, and by people of Mexican heritage elsewhere. The multiday holiday (October 31 – November 2) focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have departed to help support their spiritual journey.

As a part of their celebration, people go to cemeteries to be with the souls of the departed and build private altars containing their favorite foods and beverages, as well as photos and memorabilia, of the departed. The intent is to encourage visits by the departed so that their souls will hear the prayers and the comments of the living directed to them. Area Cantina Laredo locations will create commemorative altars to recognize the holiday.
