On Thursday, Oct. 22, community members will gather in Lewisville for a screening of Preventable, a film that centers the experiences of survivors and explores how communities can help prevent intimate partner gun violence.
The screening will be followed by a community conversation featuring survivors from the film, including Denton native Amanda Simpson. In 2018, Simpson survived a shooting by her ex-husband that killed their three young children and her boyfriend before turning the gun on himself. In the aftermath, Simpson publicly shared that she had warned the court about her ex-husband’s mental instability and felt her concerns had gone unheard. Her story illustrates the devastating consequences of intimate partner violence and the importance of taking warning signs seriously.
Simpson will join experts from the Battered Women’s Justice Project (BWJP) for a discussion about firearm access, missed opportunities for intervention and how advocates, neighbors and local leaders can help prevent violence before it becomes deadly.
The screening is part of a two-day event bringing together domestic violence experts, law enforcement professionals and county leaders for further discussion and collaboration on preventing intimate partner violence and firearm-related deaths.
The event is presented by the Battered Women’s Justice Project, the UNT College of Health & Public Service Department of Social Work’s Title IV-E Child Welfare Program and the City of Lewisville, in partnership with Denton County Friends of the Family (DCFOF). Seating is limited. Registration is available at https://www.tfaforms.com/5236764.
